What is a Wireless Thermostat?
A wireless thermostat is a portable thermostat that runs on a radio frequency rather than being hardwired. The thermostat has two parts, the thermostat itself and a receiver that communicate with each other wirelessly. The receiver is wired to the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) unit and the thermostat itself may be placed in any room in the building.
Wireless thermostats are an idea whose time has come. The benefits are remarkable and the installation is easy. A conventional thermostat typically requires some demolition to install as wires need to be run from a central location in the building to the heating and cooling unit. With a wireless thermostat, the only wiring required is from the receiver to the unit itself, and for a retrofit this can be from the original thermostat location or hidden away in an attic, closet or closer to the unit itself. The system transmits wirelessly at 418MHz using pulse code modulation and will not interfere with other wireless systems.
The benefits of a wireless thermostat are many. A conventional thermostat is typically located in a hallway or other central location, but is not necessarily indicative of where you need or want your temperature reading to be. With the wireless thermostat the unit senses the temperature of the room you are in at the moment, resulting in increased comfort.
An additional benefit of the wireless is being able to control the temperature no matter where you are. You can raise or lower the temperature from anywhere in building; the thermostat has a range of up to 500 feet and works through walls, ceilings and floors. You may use multiple controllers in one building as well, for easier access. Imagine being able to turn up the heat or raise the air conditioning from the comfort of your bed or couch!
Switching over your existing hardwired thermostat to the new wireless system makes sense, both to your comfort and to your wallet. Most homes have the thermostat unit in an inconvenient spot. If your thermostat is located in an area that receives frequent drafts, or is on a level that you rarely spend time on, having your temperature read there doesn’t work. Who cares if it’s 70 degrees in the hallway (where your wired thermostat is) if your family is in the living room and it’s 62 degrees there. By utilizing the mobile aspect of the wireless thermostat, you get the reading in the room you are in and aside from the cost savings this can bring, the comfort alone is worth the money.
